Becoming Well-Architected: A Practical Guide for Enterprise Data Architecture

21st January 2025 13:36

I sat down for a coffee in Lewes with Director of Engineering Rob Dyke, to find out his 5 top drivers of change among the data teams he leads.

He shared his recent achievements and we’ve turned each one into practical tips for you to implement in your own organisation.

1. Cost Optimisation

Why It Matters
Data-intensive operations can incur significant costs if not monitored and optimised. A key goal for any data-driven enterprise is to balance performance and capacity needs with financial efficiency.

What We Achieved

  • Negotiated Cloud Pricing: We secured a 7% discount with a major cloud provider, along with a 1/12th cash rebate, free training programs, and a discounted enterprise support agreement.
  • Reduced Cloud Spend: Lowered cloud spend as a percentage of COGS (Cost of Goods Sold) from 17% to 9% over one year.

Advice for Your Organization

  1. Review & Negotiate Agreements: Regularly revisit your cloud provider contracts. Providers are often willing to negotiate discounts and rebates, especially if you commit to certain usage levels.
  2. Use Cost Monitoring Tools: Implement services like Azure Cost Management or AWS Cost Explorer to track and optimise your spend.
  3. Optimize Resource Allocation: Turn off unused resources, right-size virtual machines, and consider serverless or container-based approaches to pay only for what you use.

2. Security

Why It Matters
Robust security protects your data assets and ensures compliance with industry standards. Security strategies should be integrated into your architecture from the start, not added as an afterthought.

What We Achieved

  • Azure Security Score: Raised the Azure Security score by 300+ points through template-based deployments.
  • NIST Baseline: Ensured all new workloads exceeded NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) baseline requirements.

Advice for Your Organization

  1. Adopt Security Templates: Pre-defined templates for infrastructure and policy enforcement help standardize security best practices across all deployments.
  2. Embed Compliance from the Get-Go: Start each project with compliance in mind—whether it’s NIST, ISO, GDPR, or other standards—to avoid costly redesigns.
  3. Continuous Security Monitoring: Use native cloud services (Azure Security Center, AWS Security Hub, etc.) to keep an eye on vulnerabilities and compliance gaps in real time.

3. Resilience

Why It Matters
Resilience ensures your data operations remain available despite failures or unexpected traffic spikes. A resilient system can recover quickly, reducing downtime and preserving the customer experience.

What We Achieved

  • Multi-Region Kubernetes Deployments: Modernized workloads using Kubernetes across multiple regions, meeting published SLAs even under heavy loads or regional outages.
  • SQL Modernization: Shifted to Azure Hyperscale to handle large-scale transactions and maintain consistent performance.

Advice for Your Organization

  1. Multi-Region or Multi-AZ Deployments: Deploy critical workloads across regions or availability zones to ensure redundancy and failover capabilities.
  2. Use Containers for Flexibility: Platforms like Kubernetes simplify scaling and recovery, especially for microservices-based workloads.
  3. Leverage Managed Services: Use cloud-native, managed database services (e.g., Azure SQL Hyperscale, Amazon Aurora) that include built-in high availability and automatic scaling.

4. Operations

Why It Matters
Operational excellence is about streamlining and automating deployments, monitoring, and maintenance. It helps teams respond quickly to changes and reduces human error, increasing overall quality and velocity.

What We Achieved

  • Automated Deployments: Introduced template-based deployments to replace manual releases, reducing failure rates and improving DORA (DevOps Research and Assessment) metrics.
  • Dev/CS Ops Automation: Automated database cloning and other routine tasks, cutting wait times and improving compliance.

Advice for Your Organisation

  1. Adopt Infrastructure as Code (IaC): Tools like Terraform, Azure Resource Manager (ARM) templates, or AWS CloudFormation enable repeatable, consistent deployments.
  2. Automate Repetitive Tasks: Free your teams to focus on value-adding activities by automating tasks like provisioning, database cloning, and CI/CD pipelines.
  3. Monitor Key DevOps Metrics: Track and optimise metrics like lead time, deployment frequency, change failure rate, and MTTR (Mean Time to Recovery) to continuously improve.

5. Performance

Why It Matters
Poor performance can hinder user experience, slow internal processes, and increase costs. Consistently optimising performance ensures that both customers and teams can operate efficiently.

What We Achieved

  • ARM Architecture Evaluation: Migrated select workloads to ARM-based instances for better performance and cost savings.
  • Kubernetes for Throughput: Shifted Windows services running on VMs to Kubernetes, significantly improving transaction throughput and calculation completion times.

Advice for Your Organization

  1. Right-Sizing & Workload Matching: Evaluate different processor architectures (x86 vs. ARM) and instance types to align workloads with the most efficient environment.
  2. Microservices & Containers: By breaking monolithic apps into microservices on Kubernetes, you can scale individual services independently and only pay for what you need.
  3. Continuous Benchmarking: Measure performance regularly using tools like JMeter, Locust, or cloud-native monitoring. Adjust resources and architecture based on real usage data.

Closing Thoughts

Adopting a well-architected approach brings tangible benefits: reduced costs, increased security, greater resilience, smoother operations, and boosted performance. Our experience in negotiating cloud costs, modernizing workloads, automating deployments, and enhancing security highlights the real-world impact that a thorough data architecture can achieve.
